Junior Catamaran Development Programme
CATAMARAN CHALLENGE 2010
Over thirty youngsters were introduced to the thrills ..... and spills of cat sailing at the Catamaran Challenge and 27th and 28th March at Datchet Water Sailing Club. Hobie Europe supplied six Hobie Twixxys for the event and Topper UK provided two Topaz 14s.
The weekend proved to be hugely popular with the young sailors travelling from as far afield as Devon to take up the opportunity to try this exciting form of sailing. Participants were drawn from a variety of mono-hull classes including Optimists, Toppers, Cadets, Fevas and Picos, and all proved to be very proficient sailors.
Brian Phipps, a renowned catamaran coach, lead the coaching of the youngsters. They all benefited hugely from his experience and enthusiasm, and quickly demonstrated their new found skills on the water.
Each day consisted of basic skills training and practice in the morning, followed by more advanced techniques and racing in the afternoon. The days culminated in a de-brief and presentation where the winners of the racing Adam Watson / Robbie Rogan and Rachel Mann / Matthew Bird were presented with awards. There were a lot of tired but excited children around at the end of each day of sailing.
The Catamaran Challenge is an important part of a recruitment drive for the Junior and Youth Catamaran Development Programmes. These sailing programmes are recognised and supported by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) in order to develop catamaran sailors to win medals at UK, European and International competitions.
The Hobie Dragoon is the RYA Recognised Junior Cat Class. To help youngsters get established in cat sailing the BHCCA (in conjunction with Hobie Europe and the Hobie Centre) offer the Dragoon charter scheme; an opportunity to charter a race ready boat with trolley and road trailer for four months, for an incredibly reasonable £300.
