Hobie Cat success at Eurocat 2010

Event: 2010 Eurocat, 30th April to 2nd May 2010, Carnac, France

The catamaran festival Eurocat 2010 was held from 30 April to 2 May 2010 in Carnac, France. More than 230 boats entered the event, now in its 24th year, and marked the start of the festivities of the 50th anniversary of the Yacht Club de Carnac. The three days of sailing combined two days of racing with eight races sailed, as well as a long distance race around the Island of Houat in the bay of Quiberon.

Eurocat is the first major international catamaran event of the season and is always the occasion builders can display their latest gear. Last year the Hobie Cat Wild Cat and the Loday Shockwave. This year we saw the exciting new C2 F18 and the Viper F16.

Famous F18 sailors were also participating in the event; Australian legend Darren Bundock and Howden raced the C2, and Mitch Booth and Pim Nieuwenhuis on the Hobie Wild Cat.

For the 2010 Eurocat, a new class, the C4, was created for the junior sailors in the Tyka, Hobie Dragoon and KL 13.5, to give them their own race on the start line alongside the existing C1 and C3 classes.

The F18 battled it out with the Dutch team, Mischa Heemskerk and Bastiaan Tentij winning the F18 class on their Hobie Wild Cat, one point ahead of Darren Bundock and Will Howden on the new C2. In third place, came Mitch Booth and Pim Nieuwenhuis on a Hobie Wild Cat.

In the C4 class, the podium is international with Adam and Jack Murphy, British team on a Hobie Dragoon, followed by teams from the Netherlands and France.

Having won the European Championships at Lake Como in Italy during 2009, the success of the British teams on the Hobie Dragoon is continuing. This shows the quality of the junior catamaran development programme in the UK, which is recognised and financially supported by the RYA, and sponsored by Hobie Cat Europe and Wildwind Holidays.

RYA Head catamaran coach, Paul Wakelin, said “This was a fantastic event for all the British junior and youth teams and demonstrated the huge improvement of their skills as a result of the programme in the UK and the training over the winter.”
